"How do parents know when they give their 16 year old youth a cell phone that they could be at risk of committing a sex crime?"
"How do we help our youth deal with the consequences of having an inappropriate picture of themselves 'out there' forever?"
"How has it become so important for youth, to be so connected, at all times with the technology?"
"How do parents and educators keep youth safe from risks and threats online, as they are not around them 24/7?"
These are questions that we are hearing and learning at our agency, SAFFRONCentre as we work with youth and their families. As we hear every day through the news media, our youth are impacted by the current, instant accessibility of the internet and all of the technology that is marketed to them, and often parents are at a loss to know how to handle the situation when their youth's actions may be inappropriate and irresponsible.
At SAFFRON Centre, we know the importance of prevention and creating awareness, we are hosting our first ever conference, "EVERY VICTIM MATTERS: Understanding the Impact of Cyberviolence on Youth" on April 22-23, 2010 at the Radisson Edmonton South Hotel.
This is a cutting edge, much needed conference that will only address the tip of the iceberg regarding these very important issues that are impacting our youth today.
Many of the issues that we are finding that are impacting youth today, involve the latest forms of technology that often leaves youth victimized and traumatized when used inappropriately. Some of the topics that we are finding are very relevant and current with the youth are:
'Cell Phones- the Electronic Leash'
'Sexting'
'Saving Face on MyBook'
'Censor Yourself'
'Sexual Assault: It's Never the Victim's Fault'
'Cyberbullying: What Happens When Youth Press Send'
'Public vs Private Domains'
'Virtual vs Reality: Issues with Online Video Gaming
